As for your question my personal preference is to make companies more product-led and agile-minded which creates the right conditions for there to be only one product role (whether you call that PM or PO is up to you). I find having both to be an anti-pattern more often than not.

This is because as you already hinted at, having a hand-off between them is sub-optimal. It leads one to be making important strategic decisions in isolation of technical feasibility and the other into a highly tactical role, disconnected from their users.

However, in saying that however I have seen places where having both have a) worked and b) made sense. I still would have preferred to have a single role. But yes you are right, with the right collaboration it can work.
